His story about being safe in his cabin and then moving to the deck when he heard the explosion was not believed (it was thought that he had appeared too quickly on deck to have come from his cabin), and he soon found himself exposed to the tender mercies of the Brisbane police force. This man was persistently worrying me to accept the reward, and I firmly believe was a detective. I was locked up in a separate and dismal cell for four weeks, not allowed to see anyone but the warder who was continually watching me, and fed on bread and water until I complained, when I was allowed one meal from a restaurant for which I paid for a fortnight, when the authorities or someone else, on my complaining paid for it. The other two meals consisted of bread and water.37
